Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey, traveling through Guanajuato and Michoacán to uncover Mexico’s fascinating Colonial Era.

This seven-day luxury Colonial Mexico trip begins with privately guided tours of Guanajuato and Patzcuaro, taking in gorgeous colonial architecture and the city’s landmarks. Then explore the local Purépecha society with tours of Janitzio Island, Santa Clara del Cobre, and Tzintzuntzan.

Day 1: Arrival in Mexico

Arrive at either LeĂłn or Mexico City International Airport and enjoy a private transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Guanajuato. Check in and enjoy a well-deserved rest!

Day 2: Guanajuato city center tour

Venture into Guanajuato’s historic city center for a fascinating privately guided tour around its most interesting sites. Visit the central plaza (known as the Zocalo), the Juárez Theater, the Alleyway of the Kiss, and Alhondiga de Granaditas (the site of the first rebel victory in the War of Independence). Also visit the Museum and Home of Diego Rivera, the Temple of Valencia, and more.

Enjoy lunch at leisure before heading back to the beautiful colonial hotel to enjoy its elite amenities.

Day 3: Patzcuaro historic center walking tour

Head to the highland colonial town of Patzcuaro, one of Michoacán’s Pueblo Magicos, where Purépecha society and 17th-century colonial architecture combine.

After check-in, enjoy a privately guided walking tour of the historic city center. Admire the cobblestone streets and colonial architecture which gives way to Tarascan and Purépecha traditions.

Day 4: Tour to Janitzio Island, Santa Clara del Cobre, and Tzintzuntzan

Today, take an unforgettable exploration of the Purépecha society, starting with a privately guided tour of Isla Janitzio and the fascinating crafts villages that surround Lake Patzcuaro.

Return mid-day and continue to Santa Clara del Cobre for a delicious, locally prepared Tarascan-style lunch. Enjoy ample time exploring the artisanal workshops for which Santa Clara is famous before continuing to the Purépecha ruins of Tzintzuntzan for a brief, but interesting visit. Late afternoon, return to the hotel for the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 5: Private transfer to Morelia, historic center walking tour

Head to the economic center of Michoacán, the impressive colonial city of Morelia. After check-in, enjoy a brief guided walking tour of Morelia’s historic center.

Explore its most important sites, including Morelia Cathedral (which took more than a century to build) and the Palacio Clavijero. Enjoy lunch at leisure in one of the many fine restaurants in the city before returning to the beautiful colonial boutique hotel.

Day 6: Morelia artistic exploration

Spend the morning exploring the city center at leisure, perhaps soaking in the atmosphere in the main plaza. Here the daily life of Morelianos is transacted and, despite the international recognition and acclaim Morelia receives, remains a typical Mexican city.

After lunch at leisure, enjoy a privately guided art tour, meeting and interacting with local artisans in their workshops. Depending on interest, visit craftspeople working with clay, wood carving, weaving, furniture, and more.

Alternately, opt to focus on colonial history, architecture, or the archeological past of this rich city and its surrounding countryside. Late afternoon, return to the lovely hotel for dinner at leisure.

Day 7: Departure day

After breakfast and check-out, take a private transfer to LeĂłn Airport for return flights home.
