Digital Detox in the Riviera Maya

Velas Resorts Introduces the ‘Detox Concierge’ As Part of 2015 Digital Detox Program
Couples and Families Invited to Power Down and Reconnect With Complimentary Spa Services and Activities

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico (February 4, 2015) – Freeing guests from the minute-to-minute stresses associated with technology, the new Digital Detox program at Mexico’s Grand Velas Resorts in Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit wants to inspire families and couples to kick off the new year on the right foot by providing a different kind of vacation experience––one that invites them to power down, disconnect from the world and focus on enjoying quality time with one another.

Digital Detox from Velas Resorts on Vimeo.

What separates Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit from the digital detox pack? Simple. Meet their Detox Concierge. When guests arrive at the resort, the concierge is tasked with the all-important duty of “cleansing” their suite by removing the flat screen television from the room, replacing it with classic board games and then whisking away their personal electronic devices (phone, laptop, iPad, PSP, etc.) to a safe.

At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, guests opting to participate in the digital detox program can trade-in their electronics for complimentary activities. Guests are given a bracelet in exchange for their electronics that guarantees them access to the following activities: Bike tour,Ecological tour of the property’s flora and fauna, Snorkeling tour, Facials and massages at one of the five best spas in Latin America.

They must earn a total of four activity bracelets (one for each day of the detox) in order to receive their electronics back. In addition to the bracelets, couples and families will be sporting a t-shirt that reads: “We are digital detoxing,” and will have a timer placed in the lobby that features the family’s last name and the time that they have already detoxed. Guests at both resorts can take advantage of the resorts’ complimentary roster of activities such as yoga, kayaking, picnic on the beach and campfire sessions.

All-inclusive rates include luxury suite accommodations, à la carte gourmet meals at a variety of specialty restaurants, premium branded beverages, 24-hour in-suite service, fitness center, taxes, gratuity and more. All packages are subject to availability. For more information on Velas Resorts, contact one of our travel planners.

Cooking Classes in Cancun and Riviera Maya

Visitors traveling to Cancun and the Riviera Maya looking for an authentic and hands-on cultural experience now have the option of attending a culinary class where expert Mexican chefs teach  Mexican cooking techniques with traditional ingredients.

The cooking school is ideally located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, in the halfway point near Puerto Morelos. Housed in a brightly colored pink and yellow Mexican home surrounded by trees and chirping birds, the workshop offers nine different classes/menus, focusing on different parts of Mexico’s cuisine: Yucatan, Puebla, Central Mexico, Seafood,  Corn, Tamales, Holiday Dishes, Mexico Delights, and  Mexico’s Best Selection, each sharing the best of Mexico’s rich heritage, culture, and traditions.

Jorge, one of our travel planners, recently attended the cooking workshop and raved, “It’s a innovative concept, and there is nothing quite like it in the area” – and he was right. The traditional Mexican kitchen, workshop, and school is a new project totally eco-friendly. It has created its own organic garden using only organic fertilizers for the freshest harvests and ingredients,  uses solar energy, and reuses the organic waste into compost. Jorge also commented that the menus that appealed most to him were the Coastal Seafood class and the Yucatan Delights class, “Being located in the Yucatan Peninsula on the Mexican-Caribbean Sea, I think it is interesting to learn the traditions and staples of what locals eat in the destination you are visiting. Ceviche, shrimp, and seafood of all kinds are very common in Cancun and of course, one cannot visit a cooking class in the Yucatan Peninsula without familiarizing themselves with traditional Mayan Cuisine!”

For those interested in attending the cooking class in the Riviera Maya, plan for it to take a whole day. The experience includes round trip transportation from your hotel and starts with offering guests breakfast accompanied with  café de olla and a small explanation of Mexican cuisine. Preparing and cooking the selected menu of the day takes about 3-4 hours and is, of course, followed by time to devour the delicious culinary masterpieces created.

While the cooking school is usually a interactive shared activity, it can be arranged for private groups. For more ideas on how to incorporate Mexico’s culinary delights into your next vacation, click here.

Time Change Takes Place in Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum (Quintana Roo)

On February 1st, 2015, the entire state of Quintana Roo will be “jumping ahead” one hour as it is now designated to a new time zone.  This one hour time difference will only take affect in the winter season.

To clarify, for 7 months a year (from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October), Quintana Roo will be on the same time as Central Mexico/Mexico City. For the remaining 5 months of the year (winter season), the state will be one hour ahead.

With this addition, Mexico will now have four different time zones from November through March:
Zone Noreste/ Pacific Time (Baja California)
Zona Pacifico/ Mountain Time (Baja California Sur, Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Nayarit)
Zona Centro/ Central Time (Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Colima, Mexico, DF, Morelos, Michoacan, Guerrero, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan)
Zona Quintana Roo / Eastern Time (Quintana Roo)

timezones

As a result of the additional hour, Quintana Roo is expected to see money saving benefits because hotels and residents will be using less electricity and tourists will be able to spend more time enjoying the beaches, theme parks, and other attractions. This change is hoping to strengthen the regions competitive advantage over other Caribbean vacation destinations such as the Bahamas and Jamaica.

What You Need To Know As A Traveler Visiting Mexico Right Now

Mexico has made headlines recently as citizens in the nation’s capital and Guerrero state have openly protested, expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the disappearance of 43 Mexican students in the southwestern state of Guerrero.  Government complicity in the disappearance along with new revelations of corruption at the highest level of President Peña Nieto’s administration related to awarding of government contracts and dubious multi-million dollar real estate deals has Mexican citizens up in arms and taking to the streets to let the world know.

So what does that mean for the safety of travelers in Mexico? Well, more than the majority of protests are peaceful, filled with people from all ages and backgrounds chanting “No violencia, no violencia” (“No violence, no violence”). While there is no doubt travelers will see references of current events  (banners and signs), the most affected areas are the towns in Guerrero where the students disappeared.  In Mexico City, although there have been many demonstrations, they have been very peaceful. Less than 1% of participants from the marches behaved disorderly and it has not affected visitors or tourist activities, outside of traffic being heavier than usual.
At Journey Mexico, we always have our clients best interests and safety in mind and we pride ourselves as an on-the-ground resource for the current state of affairs in Mexico. Below is an interview with Zach Rabinor, Journey Mexico’s CEO and Founder, on his view on the current situation of safety in Mexico:

How has your business been affected by fears of violence in Mexico and are these fears justified?

“We definitely saw a drag on growth from safety and personal security concerns stemming from negative media coverage between 2009 – 2013.  That said, we still achieved growth, but had to work 3x as hard for it!
Risks to travelers visiting Mexico’s touristic destinations has not increased, nor have travelers been targeted or affected.  The violence associated with narcotraffic and organized crime has been limited to intra cartel violence and geographically focused around main trafficking coredors most notably the border cities of Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, and Reynosa.”

Are there regions to be avoided and others that are safe to visit? (Where?)

“Outside of the aforementioned border regions, and specifically speaking about Mexico’s main tourist destinations, there is no increased risk to travelers.  Specific regions (and behaviors) to be avoided are well laid out in the US Government’s Travel Warnings for Mexico.”

What steps does your company take to make guests safer and what steps should visitors take themselves?

“We are on the ground and have local intelligence about any threats and increased risks to the routes and regions where we operate.  We also educate the travel industry and public as to safety conditions on the ground on our blog and monthly newsletters. My advice to travelers to protect themselves is to stay away from hot spots as per the travel warning and avoid establishments frequented by organized crime: strip clubs, brothels, certain after hours bars.  Working with a travel professional will ensure that travelers are in the right place at the right time and that they avoid any areas of risk.”

What are some safe, appealing destinations and activities in Mexico now?

“Baja California Sur, Copper Canyon, Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita, Sayulita, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, Campeche, Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum are all safe for travelers.”

A Copper Canyon Adventure – Born To Be Wild

Journey Mexico recently had the pleasure of welcoming 12 travelers from Canada on a journey through the Copper Canyon. As an extension flying over from Los Cabos, this “Born to be Wild” group landed in Los Mochis, toured El Fuerte,  scored First Class tickets aboard the Chepe Chihuahua al Pacifico train, visited the picturesque village of Cerocahui, and created lifetime memories at various lookout points of the canyon.

Our star travel planner in charge, Lindsay Walter, created the custom-tailored 8 day itinerary  while our on-the-ground Operations Manager, Paty Martinez, ensured the whole trip went smoothly as planned once they arrived. After the groups’ adventurous journey ended, we received this nice letter and video that we just had to share!:

“I would like you to know that our group had a fabulous time touring Copper Canyon. The trip went incredibly well with no hiccups, thanks for putting a phenomenal trip together for us. I would like to share the video we put together with you. I believe the group was impressed and pleasantly surprised with this part of Mexico and what it has to offer, with this video and our verbal recollection we will pass the word around to others so that they may experience what we did.”

2014 Year in Review

With the incredible support of our partners, suppliers, and clients, 2014 was a record breaking year for Journey Mexico!

Pushing ahead after a very eventful 2013, the year started off in peak-travel season and never seemed to let up. Due to high-demand, Journey Mexico welcomed a total of 13 new staff members. In Operations we welcomed Alejandro, Inaki, Mario, and Olivier to the Cancun office; in Sales and Groups we welcomed Mabel (DF), Isabel and Lindsay (PV), Jorge, Mariana A., and Mariana G. (CUN); and in Marketing and Administration we welcomed Lillian and Paulina (DF) and Paola (PV).

Our most exciting news came in  August when we opened our third office in Mexico’s vibrant capital, Mexico City. The new office, located right in front  of the city’s landmark,  El Ángel de la Independencia, started off with just the marketing team and quickly grew to also house operations and sales to better serve the growing number of travelers arriving or passing through Mexico City.

Spearheading the new office was our new Director of Marketing, Lillian Aviles,  who wasted no time settling in and has already  taken the city by storm developing unique VIP product and positioning the company for exponential regional growth.  Already having traveled to luxury trade shows in London, Vegas,  Marrakech, and Paris representing Journey Mexico, Lillian has helped the team in surpassing our 2014 goals.

somestaff-fam

This year we put special emphasis on site inspections and quality control in order to ensure Journey Mexico standards. Part of these efforts included  two successful FAM trips and in addition to training our staff we also brought 21 travel industry professionals from seven different countries to familiarize themselves with different regions of Mexico. In May, we covered Colonial Mexico and the Pacific Coast; and in September we ventured Southern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Throughout both trips, we broadcasted every step live via social media and welcomed over 500 virtual participants!

This year Journey Mexico also gratefully received international recognition from Travel + Leisure, Travel Weekly, Travel Age West, Town & Country Magazine, and Inc 5000. and was named by Wendy Perrin as the Destination Specialist for Mexico on her Wow List. For travel affiliations, we proudly joined LATA Nordic, Traveller Made DMC Partner, American Express’ Crafted Journey Partner, and Travel Leaders In-Country Partners.

Finally, Journey Mexico is happy to report that not only was it a great year for us, but it was a great year for Mexico overall. The number of international tourists exceeded 14.2 million, a new record!

Thank you to everyone who has accompanied us along this journey and we very much look forward to welcoming all of our travelers in 2015! We wish our entire community a joyous and prosperous New Year!

Finding Serenity in the Yucatan Peninsula

When planning a vacation getaway to the warm beaches of Mexico’s east coast, travelers usually stick to what they know: Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum. But the Mexican-Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico are actually bounded by the entire Yucatan Peninsula, extending over 700 miles of coastline, and beyond Cancun and Riviera Maya lies idyllic destinations such as Celestun, Sian Ka’an, Isla Holbox, and Bacalar, to name a few. What is great about these beach destinations are that they incorporate many of nature’s beautiful elements, setting the scene for  tranquility and the perfect relaxing vacation.

In our Tranquility in the Yucatan sample itinerary, we include a 10 day combination of sight-seeing, beach relaxation, and stays in serene boutique hotels. The first few days are full of mind and body exercises at Celestun Biospehere Reserve, followed by visits to Mayan ruins, and ending with a stay on the practically undisturbed island of Holbox.  Here are the highlights:

Merida

Capital of the state of Yucatan, the colonial city of Merida was founded on the ancient Maya city known as Thó. Today, the narrow streets and shady plazas create a feeling of the old- colonial world, as horses and cars traverse the cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old mansions. Perfect for travelers seeking luxury and culture, Merida offers first class facilities; many of the mansions and haciendas have turned into luxury boutique hotels, gourmet restaurants,  cafes, galleries and museums. A stroll down Paseo de Montejo with traditional Yucatecan music leading your way is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon and slow down time. Read more >>

XiXim Unique Maya Hotel

About an hour outside of Merida is the white sand beaches of Celestun and where you will find Xixim boutique hotel nestled in 32 acres of undisturbed paradise. This slice of serenity features 32 bungalows infused with Mayan culture. By day, guests can enjoy nature tours through the mangrove estuaries for bird watching; and by night they can explore on a moonlight safari.  The hotel boasts an impressive Wellness Center that overlooks the emerald-green sea and is a place for travelers to practice yoga, pilates, meditation, therapy, and enjoy a unique spa experience. Xixim stands out for its secluded setting where the rediscovery of one’s well being through the pleasure of connecting with nature is encouraged.

Celestun Biosphere Reserve

With 147,500 acres of protected lands, the Celestun Biosphere Reserve is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Yucatan and comprises one of the largest areas of mangroves in the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the unique eco-system of a combination of fresh water from the estuary and salt water from Gulf of Mexico, more than 200 species of birds flock to the area which has become famous for their large colonies of bright pink flamingos. Celestun is best explored by boat, winding through the canals of the mangroves and having a local guide point out the magnificent natural surroundings.

Valladolid and Coqui Coqui

Valladolid is one of few dozen towns to have been chosen and named  “Magical Towns ” (Pueblo Magico)  by Mexico based on its natural beauty, cultural riches, and historical relevance to the country. It was once the former colonial capital of the Yucatan Peninsula and since then has preserved its fine architecture and small plazas which reveal the glory of an era passed. In the town is a quaint boutique hotel and perfumery called Coqui Coqui Valladolid where guests can enjoy tailored spa treatments that maintain simplicity in their holistic approach to the guests’ physical and spiritual well-being. They say Coqui Coqui is a place “where life slows down and your senses wake up in a new peaceful dimension. ”

Isla Holbox

Located northwest of Cancun, Holbox  is a small island that makes up part of the Yum Balam Ecological Reserve. The shallow lagoons where the Caribbean Sea converges with the Gulf of Mexico create a picture-perfect refuge for visitors of all types including exotic birds and the whale shark. Life on the island is very laid-back and traditional with most of the residents making their living through fishing. It is not uncommon to see people walking around barefoot given that the streets are completely made of sand. Very few cars are allowed access on the island in order to protect the environment so the preferred mode of transportation is either golf cart, moped, or bicycle. The waters surrounding the island are shallow and gentle, radiating a blue oasis and seeming-like infinity-edge pool that has no end. An Update on Los Cabos After Hurricane Odile

Back in September of this year, Hurricane Odile swept through Baja California Sur and greatly impacted the Los Cabos community. Despite being the largest hurricane to hit the area since 1967, Los Cabos swiftly united themselves in efforts to restore the destination back to its original beauty.

As with the case with Hurricane Wilma that hit Cancun in 2005, what winds up happening in these situations is that the destination comes roaring back stronger and better than ever, and that is exactly what is happening with Cabo. With the support of the local tourist board, the community immediately launched an #Unstoppable campaign to demonstrate that “the spirit of Los Cabos is unstoppable and will us prove that no matter what, when tourists arrive, Los Cabos will be ready.”

Jairo Torres, Marketing Vice President of Los Cabos Hotel Association, recently shared in a Travel Weekly webinar, “We believe in our destintion and I truly hope you do too”. Below is a recap of the latest status in Los Cabos:

What’s Happening With The Airlines/Airport?

In October, less than a month after the hurricane hit, Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) was still able to welcome more than 18,000 passengers on 216 flights. SJD is expected to return to 100% normal operation in early December, just in time for the winter travel season.
– Southwest Airlines is already back on track with their service to Los Cabos and in addition have announced a new service out of Baltimore.
– United Airlines, which is the largest carrier into Los Cabos, is operating at about 85%.
– Delta Airlines had originally planned a huge increase in lift, but did get a bit sidelined from the hurricane. At holiday peak, they will add flights out of JFK, Seattle, and San Diego in addition to the standard offerings from Minneapolis, Dertoit, Atlanta, and Salk Lake City.
– Sunwing Airlines  joined the campaign of Los Cabos #unstoppable decorating  one of their aircraft with the image of Los Cabos which reaffirms the preference of Canadian tourists to this tourist destination of the Mexican Pacific.

What’s Open?

Almost all of the major hotels in Los Cabos are up and running, with exception for a few properties in the Corridor which were hit a bit harder than most areas. For the majority, there was no damage or loss in any of the beaches, and almost all restaurants, bars, and shops are running at 100% functionality. Of the 12 golf courses Cabo features, only one is closed, and two brand new ones are set to inaugurate in December.

So what’s next for Los Cabos?

In addition to the new flight connectivity  mentioned above in the airport update section, Los Cabos continues full-steam ahead for all the new investments pouring into the area.  Planned to open in 2015 are the Thompson Cabo San Lucas, a new boutique, luxury property; The Ritz Carlton Reserve Los Cabos, which will offer 124 oceanfront villas with private plunge pools;  the JW Marriott spanning over an impressive 14 acres; a Park Hyatt with meeting and event facilities; and The Resort at Diamante which is a massive 15,000 acre community development. By 2017 Los Cabos will also be home to a brand new, all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos which will feature 600 rooms, six restaurants, meeting space, and multiple swimming pools.

In addition to the all the hotels moving in, Los Cabos will also be opening two new golf courses in December: QUIVIRA, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that will have the largest oceanfront play of any course in Cabo; and El Cardonal at Diamante, the first ever Tiger Woods Design Course in Mexico. These two new cources will bring the destination’s total cource count to 14, qualifying Los Cabos as Mexico’s golf capital.

Hotel Mousai Debuts in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s South Zone received a bit of a revitalization this month with the grand opening of the new 72 suites-only  Hotel Mousai  (formerly part of the Garza Blanca Hotel). The adults-only boutique property features contemporary suites and a colorful infusion of Mexican design.

Architect, Carlos Palomera, and Hotel Mousai’s Creative Director, Karoll Gonzalez, worked closely together to make Hotel Mousai a bold, trendy statement in an otherwise quiet location. With spectacular views of Banderas Bay, Palomera was inspired by the surrounding art and nature and strived to creatively capitalize on the “mind-blowing views and lush green jungle” that circles the hotel. With that as his goal, he was able to design the 18-story building harmoniously with it’s environment incorporating multi-layered architectural elements to the organic contours of the mountains behind it, maximizing the views of the Vallarta skyline as well as sweeping outline of the Banderas Bay.

Inside the hotel, the interior design also reflects the art/nature concept. The name of the hotel references Greek Muses implying all types of art as well as inspiration and the senses. Gonzalez explains, “The intention was to make the suites at Hotel Mousai playful statements that embody the idea of a sensual partnership and chic romance. We want our guests to feel comfortable yet frivolous, elegant yet trendy. We have sought to make the functional, fashionable and the practical luxurious, like the electric curtains and lighting that are pre-set to the flip of a switch and the seductive gold tiled Jacuzzi on a private deck that makes you feel like the Queen of Sheba on tour.”

The 72 suites at Hotel Mousai are divided into two categories: the Mousai Junior Suite and the Ultra Mousai Suite. Each suite features a private terrace with panoramic views of the bay, a jetted plunge pool with opulent Venetian finish gold tiles, and a siesta turn-down service with hammock. The hotel describes them as “shamelessly lavish” with no detail left overseen.

Hotel Mousai also features “The Terrace”  which is a breakfast venue in the morning; a stylish teahouse by day, and a sophisticated cigar lounge at night; and “Hiroshi” a Japanese restaurant that flamboyantly blends Asian textures and ingredients. Their spa, Spa Imagine,  features a five-cycle vitality pool, plunge shower, plunge pool, large jacuzzi, and therapy rooms fashioned to embody one of the seven sacred energy Chakras.

The Rooftop is the most flashy as it soars 112 meters above sea level and features an expansive infinity pool, majestic views of Puerto Vallarta, and sensational cocktails and snacks. We invite you to “be among the first guests to taste the lavish comfort of Hotel Mousai”.
