Creating Change: Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community Impact

At Journey Mexico, we believe that travel can and should support local communities and environmental projects. This year, as part of our conscious push towards a more sustainable approach to travel at all levels of operation, we´ve:

  • created a Journey Mexico sustainability committee that’s been actively researching suppliers and working with charities who share our ethos.
  • constantly creating new experiences with sustainability as a driving factor. See here!
  • committed to becoming the first B-corporation luxury travel DMC in Mexico and continue to work towards this goal.

Read on to find out about some of the impactful collaborations we´ve established so far and some of our goals for the future!

Our Traveler Experiences

Mundo Maya Foundation

This non-profit organization works with Mayan communities in the Yucatán Peninsula to develop economic and social projects that promote as well as preserve the cultural and natural wealth of Mayan heritage.

In support of the project, we arrange a hands-on experience with the Yaxunah and Granada Mayan communities, creating the opportunity to connect with traditional horticulture and gastronomy. Our travelers get to see how organic produce is cultivated at a local ´milpa´ (agricultural field), and sow seeds or harvest produce from the backyards of local homes, guided by the Mayan women who tend to their gardens daily to provide for their community. Guests will also learn firsthand how to cook an authentic ´cochinita pibil´ in a pre-Hispanic ´pib´ oven made in the ground, use ancestral tools to prepare the seasoning, and elaborate fresh tortillas from ´masa´ (dough) made from locally grown corn.

La Venta Eco-Village & the San Mateo Ozolco Community

La Venta project was created and is led by a group of young people from the San Mateo Ozolco community. After experiencing life as migrants in the U.S., they returned home to Mexico with a strong desire to preserve and share their cultural and gastronomic heritage. The name of the community and project, ´Ozolco – Ne’nemi´, means “walking on the path” in Nahuatl, referencing the community’s deep connection to the forest and their sense of duty to preserve it for future generations. Through the project, the group is protecting traditions and cultural legacy while working towards reforestation, creating employment, and inspiring others to do the same.

For our guests traveling between Puebla and Mexico City, we can take an alternative, scenic route through Paso de Cortes, the mountain path forged by Hernán Cortes on his way to confront the Aztec Emperor, Moctezuma. On the way, we´ll organize a stop to explore La Venta, find out about its sustainability projects, and enjoy a locally sourced lunch. A $20 donation is made on behalf of each of our participating travelers.

Arca Tierra & La Escuela Campesina

In the south of Mexico City, Xochimilco is home to the city´s last surviving “chinampas”, an ancient agricultural technique that dates back to the Aztecs. These small plots of land are built upfrom the canal beds, appearing to ´float´ on the water, and have provided a sustainable way to grow crops for some 2000 years, however, they´re now in danger of abandonment.

We take our travelers to learn about the importance of this agricultural heritage system, explore the chinampas, and learn about agroecology with Arca Tierra, a local project dedicated to the rehabilitation and regeneration of the land. The initiative impulses La Escuela Campesina (school of farming) to provide local farmers with training in agroecological practices. Guests may also make a personal donation to support these valuable efforts.

Milpa Alta

Operating since 2012, ´La Ruta de la Milpa´, is a series of agricultural fields where traditional techniques are used to cultivate staple crops like corn and the edible ´nopal´ cactus. The project has collaborated with around 60 local families, increasing production and reviving the farming lifestyle as a way to make a living.

We take our travelers for an interactive experience of the Milpa Alta community´s sustainable farming legacy and local culinary heritage, observing how the nopal fields are tended to, savoring an organic countryside breakfast, seeing how to grind native ingredients to make mole sauce, and participating in a corn workshop with renowned chef, Jorge Córcega. Each visit includes a 20 USD donation that will directly support the Milpa Alta community project, which is currently implementing a water collection system for its crops.

Journey Mexico Team Volunteering

Emmanuel Children´s Home Puerto Vallarta

This month, our Puerto Vallarta-based team hosted an outdoor movie evening with Emmanuel Children´s Home. We enjoyed a screening of the Pixar movie ´Wall-E´ with popcorn, soft drinks, and some tasty pastor tacos!

The foundation welcomes children who find themselves in difficult family situations, at risk, orphaned, or living on the streets, and offers them a loving and safe home, as well as access to education.

Los Volcanos Permaculture and Agroecology Center

Located in San Andrés Cholula, Puebla, this young project began in 2019 as an idea between friends who were concerned by the problems experienced as a result of climate change and the loss of biodiversity. Los Volcanes is founded on community work and strives to raise awareness through various workshops and courses that address the importance of natural resources and comprehensive wellbeing. In addition to developing a sustainable community based on models of permaculture and agroecoloy, the project offers trainings including crop cultivation, treatment of bees, herbalism, bio-construction, the use of family gardens and greenhouse management.

In September 2023, the entire Journey Family will participate in sustainable activities with Los Volcanos, as part of our annual company retreat – watch this space!

5 Reasons the Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a Favorite Hotel in the Riviera Maya

The Banyan Tree Mayakoba blends nature, luxury, and privacy in paradise. Read on to find out why it continues to be one of our favorite hotels in the Riviera Maya:

1. Prime Location

The Banyan Tree sits within the gorgeous Mayakoba complex, an opulent gated community on the Riviera Maya´s sparkling coastline, home to four luxury resorts and stunning tropical beauty.

The arrival experience lets nature take center stage; a long driveway meandering through thick vegetation leads to a beautiful open-air lobby looking over Mayakoba´s emblematic network of canals and mangroves – home to over 200 species of wildlife. The resort offers a luxury vacation experience while putting you at the heart of the Mexican Caribbean´s natural wonder with freshwater lagoons, dunes, jungle and ocean at your fingertips.

Set between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, the Banyan Tree´s location is ideal for exploring the treasures of the region and we love connecting our guests with authentic local experiences (see here: 5-Day Riviera Maya Discovery based at Banyan Tree Mayakoba).  Travel back in time visiting ancient Mayan cities, learn about horticulture practices and traditional Mayan cooking techniques from present-day communities, traverse millennia-old subterranean river caves, and snorkel the second largest coral reef in the world on a private catamaran cruise.

2. New Luxury Accommodations

Banyan Tree Mayakoba added to its luxury offerings with a recent $50 million expansion. We were wowed by the latest collection of Beachfront Pool Suites and Lagoon & Sunset Rooftop Pool Villas, as well as the stunning Sands Beach Club.

The new Beachfront Lanai Pool Suite is set right on the sand with direct beach access that´s just steps away from the picture-perfect Caribbean Sea. Open floor-to-ceiling glass doors from the bedroom to a wooden deck, partially secluded by a tropical garden that features a private heated plunge pool. For a super private soak, the suite also has its own peaceful interior patio with a hot tub and outdoor shower.

The Lagoon & Sunset Rooftop Pool Villas offer nature views from a different perspective. This two-story option is still close to the beach while boasting serene lagoon vistas. Head up to the villa´s rooftop terrace in the evenings to watch the sun go down over a mangrove horizon while you relax in your heated plunge pool. Downstairs, there´s also a private outdoor bathtub to take advantage of.

3. Connection to Water

Mayakoba translates as ´village over the water´ in Mayan, and this is a key element to the Banyan Tree experience. Almost all the resort’s world-class dining venues have some kind of water view, from Saffron´s Thai dishes overlooking canals and mangroves to romantic, private dinner cruises aboard Ixchel, a traditional pre-Hispanic ´trajinera´ boat.

Every villa has a private pool, many with outdoor showers and private patio´s with jacuzzies, some guestrooms are reached via a boat ride through the canals, and the beautiful spa features overwater treatment cabins as well as hydrothermal therapies to cleanse and detoxify the body.

The recently opened Sands Beach Club is a showstopper – enjoy fresh seafood at the stylish raw bar accompanied by eternal views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. The spectacular oceanfront infinity swimming pool is an idyllic spot to relax the afternoon away while little ones are amused at The Ranger´s Kids Club, located within the beach club. Grab complimentary paddleboards, kayaks, and snorkel equipment for the ultimate water immersion.

4. Unique On-site Experiences

While Journey Mexico takes you out to experience the best of the Riviera Maya, the Banyan Tree´s engaging activities will keep you entertained back at the resort.

Discover the property´s three-mile-long nature trail, designed for walking, jogging, and bicycles, complete with rest areas and bird towers. Play a round of golf at Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon Mayakoba, featuring three different ecosystems on a journey through jungle, mangroves, and oceanfront sands. Families will love making memories together at creative culinary classes and watching baby turtles scuttle to the ocean at seasonal turtle releases. Dive into the world of Mexican spirits, learning about the history and tasting notes of emblematic distillates like tequila and mezcal, or connect with local nature as you kayak through Mayakoba´s serpentine canal network.

5. Sustainability

We love Banyan Tree Mayakoba´s commitment to eliminating single-use plastic, with 50% eradicated over the past two years by exchanging all plastic water bottles for glass and plastic straws for paper. The resort´s team also oversees recycling procedures, separating waste and collaborating with different companies to ensure it goes to the correct destinations.

Taking the daily eco boat tour at least once during your stay is a must to explore the property´s canals and wildlife with a resident biologist. The resort´s golf carts and complimentary bicycles are a great touch for navigating the winding roads and walkways where local flora and fauna can be spotted.

What We Love About Mexico City Right Now

Mexico´s exuberant capital city has fast become a hot destination to enjoy diverse culinary experiences, a vibrant cultural landscape, neighborhoods that feel more like villages, and a growing assortment of luxury accommodations. Read on to find out why Mexico City is on every traveler’s list these days…..

La Roma Neighborhood

Mexico City´s neighborhoods each have their own personality and make for great bases of exploration without feeling overwhelmed by the big city. Centrally located, Roma Norte has been turning heads for a while and keeps on getting cooler! This walkable neighborhood encompasses renowned restaurants, edgy Mezcal bars, and coffee shop culture, with a sprinkling of contemporary galleries and lush green park spaces. A change to office norms spurred on by the pandemic has seen a wave of digital nomads adopt La Roma to soak up those Mexico City vibes, showcasing the cultural and culinary gems of the area to an international audience via social media.

Award-Winning Restaurants

Foodie offerings in the capital have been getting plenty of attention too with numerous restaurants gaining international recognition and awards. Rosetta is an eternal classic in La Roma to taste seasonal Mexican dishes by Elena Reynada, with a sister bakery across the street for bites on the go. In the dynamic Polanco neighborhood contemporary Mexican fare comes from the likes of Jorge Vallejo´s Quintonil and the world famous Pujol, headed by chef Enrique Olvera. One of our favorite boutique hotels, Casa Polanco also calls this area of the city home, a gorgeous, renovated 40´s mansion that feels like a private residence, and serves up classic breakfast options and tea time at their terrace restaurant, La Veranda.

Galleries and Museums

Mexico City is a cultural hub when it comes to galleries and museums, with an array of venues that exhibit anything from huge collections of pre-Hispanic artifacts at the National Museum of Anthropology (we recommend Journey Mexico´s intimate after-hours special access!), to a deep dive into Frida Kahlo´s life and work at Casa Azul, and cutting edge contemporary art at La Roma´s OMR gallery. The architecturally striking Soumaya and Jumex Museums stand opposite one another in Polanco, boasting a timeline of artwork that reaches from Mesoamerica to the modern period. If you´re in town mid-February check out Zona Maco, Latin America´s largest art fair platform that brings together leading and emerging galleries, from both national and international arenas.

Plan your trip to Mexico City

We´ve seen that travelers from around the globe are hungry for authentic Mexico City experiences. We love taking our guests on a journey through the customs, cuisine, and creative happenings of this captivating city! Are you ready to find out what makes Mexico City tick? SEE FULL MAP ➔

Riviera Nayarit

Home to the indigenous Cora and Huichol communities, iconic Marieta Islands, world-class surfing, and chilled out beaches galore, the Riviera Nayarit encompasses more than 200 miles of coastline north of Puerto Vallarta.

Chacala

Slow down at Chacala beach town, located on the northern shoreline of Nayarit. Thatched palm roofs, fresh grilled seafood, and soft sands set the scene, where a friendly close-knit community lives an unhurried life among coconut trees and jungle mountainsides. Chacala´s three main beaches see strong waves at Las Cuevas, calmer waters at Chacalilla, and great surfing conditions at La Caleta.

Las Cuevitas Cove

Arriving to Las Cuevitas on a local fishing boat feels like stumbling upon a secret paradise beach hidden in the jungle. The not-so-accessible road adds to the seclusion – you may be the only one here – and creates a magical setting for snorkeling, kayaking, and bathing in clear waters. Come prepared as there´s nothing else around!

Costa Canuva

Announced back in 2016, Costa Canuva is a close to $2 billion master-planned development that will feature the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Hotel and Fairmont within the Nauka development, a private community designed by world-renowned architect, Olson Kundig.

Nauka covers 750-acres in a cliffside jungle enclave, with private residences and world-class facilities including a beach club, Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa 18-hole golf course, marina and yacht club, lacrosse fields, spa and wellness center, a community organic garden, and miles of unspoiled beaches. Nauka property owners will also enjoy access to the amenities of the 5-star Ritz-Carlton, set to open in the fall of 2023 with over 90 luxury hotel rooms and 14 suites. Preparations for the Fairmont are in process, with no confirmed opening date just yet.

Mandarinas

The Mandarinas development is surrounded by verdant Sierra de Vallejo Mountains, palm-scattered beaches, tropical rainforest, and quiet coastal towns on the neighboring shores.

Opened in 2020, One&Only Mandarina calls this incredible setting home, featuring 104 standalone treehouses and clifftop villas with breathtaking views and private pools. The property was carefully planned to preserve and nurture native flora, wildlife and ecosystems while providing an immersive luxury experience in nature. The resort features miles of hiking and biking trails, ocean activities, infinity pools, stunning beaches, a kids club and adventure playground, ziplines, tennis and basketball courts, the Mandarina Polo & Equestrian Club, spa and wellness rituals.

Private residences can be purchased, perched along the mountainside or immersed in the rainforest, with access to the resort´s facilities and exclusive discounts on services.

Set beside a tranquil estuary, Rosewood Mandarina is set to open in 2024. The residential-style resort will encompass a collection of private residences, eateries, a beach club, and signature Asaya spa.

San Pancho

Casual restaurants, boutiques and stalls with jewelry and artisan goods line the main street of this chilled bohemian town, leading to a golden sand beach, coconut trees, and great waves for surfing. Locals and travelers make up a close community, where beachgoers clap as the sun melts into the ocean each evening.

Sayulita

Over the past decade this sleepy fishing town has boomed into an international hub with a fun party scene and vibrant surf culture. Shop boutiques and stalls in cobblestone streets lined with colorful bunting, explore art galleries, and find your favorite breakfast spot before a day on the beach. Recently announced is the plan for Belmond Milaroca to open in 2025. Nestled between Sayulita and San Pancho, the 105-acre Milaroca will be designed draw inspiration from the nearby villages  and adopt non-invasive building practices. Milaroca will include a hotel with 57 suites, 12 three-bedroom villas, 27 private villas, six dining venues, and a wellness center.

Punta Mita

This coveted, spear-shaped peninsula lies around an hour´s drive north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Tropical beauty, coastal cuisine, and Pacific Ocean meet opulent residential communities, the Four Seasons and St. Regis luxury resorts, plus swanky beach clubs and two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses. Poised for both relaxation and adventure, travelers can snorkel by the striking Marieta Islands, spot wintering humpback whales, and catch world-class waves at local surf spots.

In late 2022, the four Seasons opened, Naviva, an adults-only luxury tented resort surrounded by beautiful nature with views of the Pacific Ocean. The sustainability-focused design features solar panels, natural drainage, and upcycled artwork, alongside the luxury of private pools and spacious decks.

Conrad Punta de Mita

Opened in 2020, the Conrad Punta de Mita lies within the Litibu gated community on a beautiful sandy beach. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the 324-room luxury resort offers three pristine swimming pools, the Conrad Spa with its hydrotherapy area and Mesoamerican sweat lodge (temazcal), and a choice of fine dining experiences.

Susurros del Corazón Auberge Resorts Collection

This tranquil beachfront resort opened in winter of 2022, offering 59 sophisticated guest rooms and suites with large, nature-framing windows. Verdant gardens flow down to the pristine shoreline and three infinity edged pools invite guests to soak up the sunshine. Located a little south of Punta Mita, Susurros del Corazón is just a 45-minute drive from Puerto Vallarta airport.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

This cheerful fishing village is home to Banderas Bay´s most modern marina, a three-mile golden beach, and a bustling Sunday market that hosts everything from skilled artisan crafts and artwork, to flowers, food, and jewelry.

Bucerias

Bucerias is a traditional coastal town that attracts international and national travelers for its sandy beach, laid-back vibe, and calm waters. Families come to spend a relaxing day, and many retirees make a second home here over the winter months. Visitors can have fun with an array of water activities, wander the winding streets past craft and souvenir stalls, or enjoy the sunshine in the sand. Taste fresh seafood at local eateries or explore the more upmarket restaurants and hipster breakfast spots that have popped up in recent years.

Nuevo Nayarit (previously known as Nuevo Vallarta)

Nuevo Nayarit´s long sandy beach and gentle waters attract locals and travelers alike. One of Nayarit’s´ most visited destinations, there´s no shortage of condos, luxury hotels, boutique shopping, golf courses, and adventure activities in the ocean. Nuevo Vallarta lies on the border with Jalisco state and is located just a 20-minute drive from Puerto Vallarta airport.

Puerto Vallarta

The gateway between the Riviera Nayarit and Costa Alegre, Puerto Vallarta was once a sleepy fishing village whose tropical scenes and paradise beaches burst into the global consciousness after ´The Night of the Iguana´ movie was filmed there and released in the 60s. This chilled coastal city continues to grow exponentially; creating a juxtaposition of quaint cobblestone streets and modern apartment blocks, peaceful beaches and raucous fiesta, traditional taco stands and fine dining restaurants. You can explore family neighborhoods, take a yacht onto the water, zipline through jungle canopy, or stroll the Malecón boardwalk and enjoy the sea breeze. Puerto Vallarta maintains its charm and beach town rhythm, while stepping into the shoes of one of Mexico´s major beach destinations.

Costa Alegre

Meaning ´cheerful coast´ in Spanish, the Costa Alegre stretches some 57 miles from the beaches south of Puerto Vallarta to Navidad Bay, just before the border between Jalisco and Colima states. This rugged coastline boasts a wild beauty and sense of seclusion that´s great for those looking to get off the grid for a while, surrounded only by chilled oceanside towns, beautiful coves and extraordinary views to the horizon. The oceanview Highway 200 winds its way down the coastline, with Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo airports on each end.

Xala

The highly anticipated Xala project has claimed its place on the Costa Alegre, spanning 3000 acres of white sandy beaches and agricultural hillsides. Developed with a socially and environmentally conscious approach, Xala aims to benefit the families and residents already living in there, while proposing the destination as a luxury lifestyle community including new residences, a handful of hotel brands, and beach clubs. The community side of the project is already underway, with a skate park, culture and learning centers, and reforestation and agricultural projects in place. Visitors will be able to arrive at some point in 2023, with the opportunity to participate in environmental, social, and agricultural community projects. Hotel projects include: Six Senses Xala set to open in 2026.

Chalacatepec Airport is also underway just 5 minutes from the development.

Costa Careyes

Careyes was founded by Gian Franco Brignone in late 1960s as a secluded hideaway for creatives, celebrities, and high-end bohemians. In this exclusive enclave you´ll find brightly painted villas built into the cliffsides, casitas, bungalows, and even a Polo Club. The Careyes Foundation was set up to protect the local environment and benefit 12 rural communities along the surrounding coastline, hosting a turtle sanctuary, sports, music, and art programs, a vocational training center, and children´s English initiatives.

Four Seasons Tamarindo

Within this spectacular setting, the Four Seasons Tamarindo opened its doors in late 2022, raising the bar for luxury resorts in Mexico. Immersed in a 3,000-acre nature reserve, the grounds encompass cliffs, verdant jungle, pristine beaches, and a 34-acre working farm. Contemporary architecture blends into the surroundings and all 157 accommodations enjoy expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. There´s a spa, oceanview golf course, fine dining, a trio of infinity pools and plenty of activities to connect with nature and local culture.

Manzanillo

This important port town in Colima state is a favorite for holidaymakers thanks to its relaxing pace, fresh seafood, great beaches, and authentic Mexican feel.

Head to a private cabaña at Pelican Beach cove to relax, snorkel, swim and spot seasonal migrating whales on the horizon. Chill with a dip in the water and zesty margarita at Vista, an adults-only infinity pool with a swim up bar and oceanfront views where waves crash onto craggy rocks. You´ve also got the choice of a 27-hole championship golf course and some of the best surf on the planet nearby.

O&O has mastered the art of the family holiday, keeping youngsters entertained with treasure hunts, piñata-making and exclusive movie nights at Kids Only club, while teens are engaged with surfing and DJ parties at OneTribe. Enjoy some fun together as a family at Agua’s freeform infinity pool, featuring a child-friendly splash pool to one side.

Lunch

When it’s time to eat, Breeze and poolside Agua restaurants serve up tasty lunch menus that can satisfy an array of cravings. Tuck into fresh seafood and crunchy salads, gourmet oysters on ice, or some good old fajitas before you ease into the afternoon.

Wellbeing

The spa experience comes complete with plunge pools, rain showers, outdoor pavilions and swinging day beds in tropical gardens.

Go deeper and take part in an ancient Mayan ceremony lead by O&O’s shaman. Purify body and mind with a temazcal ritual – a pre-Hispanic sweat lodge, participate in conscious breathwork practice to open the heart, or enjoy a guided meditation accompanied by the sounds of the ocean and aromas of medicinal herbs.

Tips & Recommendations for Booking Travel to Mexico in 2023

Travel is stronger than it ever has been before, therefore planning trends have shifted a bit. We recommend making reservations for 2023 as early as possible, particularly for villa stays over Christmas and New Year´s Eve. You’ll also want to plan at least 6 to 8 months in advance for Day of the Dead celebrations on November 1st and 2nd, as accommodation gets booked up well in advance. This is the same recommendation for trips to witness the Monarch butterfly migration in Michoacán from late-November to late-March, where there is limited availability for our favorite hotel, Rancho San Cayetano.

Exploring Mexico City on Journey’s Annual Company Retreat

We´re still buzzing from Journey´s recent trip to Mexico City! Every year, we get together in one of Mexico´s magical destinations for our corporate retreat, and this one was highly anticipated after pandemic lockdowns and restrictions. It was amazing to finally gather the whole team in one place, with staff from every area of operations flying into the capital – Journey Costa Rica was there too!

These annual trips are an opportunity for old friends and new faces to come together and share experiences, explore ideas, and unify goals. We had a stellar itinerary, packed with captivating destination activities, team workshops, hotel inspections, and family-style meals at some of Mexico City´s top restaurants. We got to step into the shoes of our guests and have the full Journey Mexico experience; that means special accesses, expert guides, luxury accommodation, and seamless service to join up the dots.

Daily staff meetings set the stage for discussion and collaborative goal setting. One of Journey´s current priorities is to revolutionize the sustainability of our operations and certify as a B-Corp Company. We believe that business can and should have a positive impact both environmentally and socially – that includes our employees, communities, clients, suppliers, and the planet – so we decided to take action. Each of our departments worked together to set objectives for how to improve aspects of sustainability in their area and how to measure the success of these goals. We´re motivated and ready to smash our targets!

Shout out to Sofitel Mexico City for giving our 60-strong team a luxurious home-away-from-home and catering to all our needs. The hotel´s location right on Reforma avenue was perfect for exploring the city, and those panoramic views over the metropolis are hard to beat.

Take a look behind the scenes at what we got up to on the 2022 #JourneyCDMX retreat

Mexico City Market & Taco Tour

We kicked off the trip in the beating heart of any city, it´s market. Our knowledgeable guide led us through an explosion of flavors as we tasted our way through spicy seafood, mouthwatering endemic fruits, rich tacos, edible flowers, and…BUGS! Some of us were brave enough to crunch into Mexico´s traditional edible insects like grasshoppers and even scorpions!

National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia)

The special off-hours access to the National Museum of Anthropology is our favorite way for Journey´s guests to experience the vast collection of ancient Mexican artifacts on display. Visting at time when it’s closed to the public, we felt like we had the place to ourselves as our guides brought the history and culture behind the pieces to life. Seeing the 24-ton Aztec Sun Stone in the flesh is a must while in Mexico City!

Tour Historic Center, Zócalo

No trip to the capital is complete without a walk around the Historic Center! Learning about the past of this area is fascinating, from its origins as an Aztec island on Lake Texcoco, to the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral in the Spanish colonial period, and its contemporary use for government headquarters, cultural events, and social issues.

Meet & Greet Lucha Libre

It was a night to remember at the Lucha Libre! Mexican wrestling is a classic cultural event that´s adored by its fans and makes for a thrilling evening out. With Journey´s special access, we had the unique experience of arriving to an empty Arena Mexico before the wrestling began. We got to go backstage and meet the personalities behind those iconic masks, who told us all about the stadium and personal stories from years in the sport. During the fights, even the quietest members of the team were cheering on the luchadores and fist pumping! We got the perfect souvenir of photos with the wrestlers right by the ring, before closing the evening with tasty pastor tacos.

Coyoacán & Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul

Perhaps Mexico´s most recognizable character, Frida Kahlo, is a source of intrigue and inspiration around the world. We visited the painter´s Casa Azul (blue house) in the leafy southern suburb of Coyoacán. It´s amazing to walk the same floors as Frida did and get a sense of how she lived and worked. A really special feature at the house-museum is Frida´s collection of personal objects, including hand-painted medical corsets, which give an insight into the artist´s enduring pain from her accident. These intimate pieces were only uncovered in recent years on instruction from Frida´s husband, Diego Rivera, that they should remain locked away in the bathroom for at least 15 years after his death.

Farewell Dinner at Four Seasons

All good things must come to an end, but not before enjoying a beautiful farewell dinner at the Four Seasons. For the final time, we enjoyed a delicious meal together and raised a glass to Mexico City!

Our #JourneyCDMX retreat was all about connection, reflection, and joy. We had an amazing time dipping into the best of the capital´s culture, history, and gastronomy, and we can´t wait to share it all with you! And of course, we cannot forget, a special congratulations Zach, Rebecca, and Matteo on celebrating Journey Mexico’s 19th Anniversary!

Top 7 of Mexico´s Extraordinary Animals & Where to Find Them

Mexico´s vast diversity of wild places and captivating backdrops is home to animals that are just as remarkable. From whales off the coast of Baja´s desert-meets-ocean landscapes to the monkeys roaming Mayan temples in the south, we´ve put together our highlights of Mexico´s majestic animals you won´t want to miss.

Axolotls in Mexico City

Season: All Year Round
These curious and adorable amphibians are endemic to Mexico´s basin, an area of vast lakes in pre-Hispanic times where present-day Mexico City lies. As the metropolis sprawled, the axolotl´s natural habitat became confined to several canals in Xochimilco, an area to the south of Mexico City. In response to the axolotl´s critically endangered status, scientists, farmers, and local communities have come together to help breed axolotls and regenerate the species’ habitat with the development of more chinampas; these pre-Hispanic floating gardens help to filter pollution in the canals. Journey Mexico cares about the conservation of amazing axolotls as well as their ancient habitats. Support ongoing preservation efforts while you learn more about the chinampa agricultural heritage system and their rare amphibians on our Axolotls and Chinampas in Xochimilco experience, led by the non-profit organization REEDUCA.

The Whales of Baja & Banderas Bay

Humpbacks
Season: December to March
The winter months bring the chance to spot humpback whales off Mexico´s western shores, in Banderas Bay and Baja California Sur. Whether you´re soaking up Puerto Vallarta´s laid-back beach vibes, sipping a poolside cocktail in a Punta Mita luxury villa, or taking a private boat out of Cabos San Lucas, keep your eyes peeled for these majestic marine mammals!

For humpbacks in the northern hemisphere, the summer months are all about feeding on krill in cold Arctic waters before the winter migration to the Mexican Pacific´s tropical waters, where tens of thousands of whales travel to focus on breeding and calving. When the winter season comes around, we love the excitement of seeing an iconic humpback whale tail flick out of the water, or when we´re really lucky, a playful leap into the air followed by a dramatic splash.

Gray Whales
Season: January to March
Gray whales are known to be curious, friendly, and uncharacteristically social with humans, often swimming over to bump up against boats and say hello. The chance to have deep moments of connection with such huge marine mammals is a big draw for visitors, who take day trips and multi-day adventures to encounter the friendly grays on Baja California Sur´s Pacific side.

These incredible animals make the 6,000-mile migration south from the Northern Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea as part of their annual winter migration. San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo Liebre Lagoon (Guerrero Negro), and Magdalena Bay are the three spots in Baja chosen by the whales´ intuition, as areas that have warm, shallow waters and natural protection from both predators and rough ocean conditions. Gray whales are also known to occasionally pop up around Banderas Bay!  Explore Magdalena bay with expert guides on our Baja Multisport: Gray Whales, Hiking & Sea Kayaking itinerary.

Blue Whales
Season: January to March
The blue whale is believed to be the largest animal that has ever graced the planet and can grow up to 100 feet long! In the late winter months these awe-inspiring creatures travel to Baja Sur´s Loreto Bay National Marine Park to feed, mate, and calve. Located in the Sea of Cortez on the peninsula´s east coast, the park has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its natural beauty and wealth of biodiversity. That´s one magical backdrop to see flukes and spouts flick up as blue whales glide through the water!

Whale Sharks in La Paz and Isla Mujeres

Season: La Paz November to March & Isla Mujeres mid-May to mid-September
Despite their name, whale sharks are the world´s largest species of fish with an average size of 18 to 33 feet, and not harmless at all! These gentle giants eat only small shrimp, fish, and plankton and are easily recognizable by their flat head and a pattern of white dots that covers the top of the body. It´s a surreal and beautiful experience slipping into the water with a snorkel to swim alongside such graceful, immense animals.

Mexico is blessed with whale sharks around the bay of La Paz in Baja California Sur and Isla Mujeres, an island just across from Cancun. The peaceful creatures arrive to each location in different months, so you can have this incredible experience in Mexico almost all year round!

The sustainability of whale shark operations is our priority and it´s important to Journey Mexico that the government regulations in place to protect whale sharks are respected, such as keeping six feet distance in the water, not using flash photography, and not trying to touch these amazing animals.

Monarch Butterflies in Michoacan and Mexico State

Season: November to March
Each winter, delicate orange and black monarch butterflies embark on one of the most impressive migrations we know to reach the perfect conditions for reproduction. Setting off from Canada and the U.S, the floaty wonders will cover some 3,000 miles to arrive high up in the forests of Michoacán, sometimes travelling up to 100 miles per day . That´s the longest migration of any insect!

As the sun´s warmth shines through in the daytime, the monarchs open their patterned wings and fly around as part of a mating ritual, creating a collective, fluttering orange blaze for spectators. Time stands still when you´re faced with such an ethereal scene, it´s a hypnotic experience and one you´ll never forget.

The monarchs are the only butterfly species that achieve a two-way migration, returning north in the springtime. Since the average life span of a monarch is around four to five weeks, it’s the great-great grandchildren that will make it back to continue the cycle!

Experience the butterfly awe yourself with our Monarch Butterflies and Playa Viva: An Eco-Friendly Adventure itinerary.

Pink Flamingos of the Yucatan Peninsula

Season: Río Lagartos April to June, Celestún December to March
Did you know you can see pink flamingoes in two different places in Mexico? Both are located on the Yucatán Peninsula and have their seasons at different times of year, maximizing flamingo spotting potential! The iconic birds get their bright color from pigments found in algae that get passed up the food chain, resulting in fabulous pink feathers. Mexico´s flamingos split their time between the Celestún Biosphere Reserve on the Yucatán´s west coast, and Río Lagartos, on the northern coast.

Monkeys in Southern Mexico

Season: All Year Round
Monkeys can be found swinging through the trees of southern Mexico, where the Lacandon Jungle stretches from Chiapas state into Guatemala. One of our favorite moments to see monkeys in the wild is when we´re exploring ancient Mayan cities surrounded by verdant tropical forest. There´s a good chance of seeing spider monkeys going about their business and you´ll hear the local howler monkeys before they come into view!

Palenque is an outstanding archaeological site in the area with well conserved architectural remains, or for more adventure take a trip to Yaxchilán and Bonampak archaeological zones. Set deep in the jungle on the banks of the Usumacinta River on the border with Guatemala, Yaxchilán can only be accessed by boat, while Bonampak´s cave paintings give an amazing insight into the ancient Mayan world. If this sounds like your thing, check out our itinerary Chiapas: A Journey through Mexico Less Visited´.

To get closer to spider monkeys, head to Akumal Monkey Sanctuary in the Riviera Maya, where groups of youngsters that have been harmed in the wild are integrated and socialized together.

Sea Lions at Espiritu Santo Island

Season: All Year Round
Isla Espiritu Santo is a must when visiting La Paz to admire untouched rocky landscapes, crystal clear waters, and white sandy beaches. We like to take our travelers out by boat to explore the flora and fauna on this unique island, making a stop to snorkel and swim with the resident Los Islotes sea lion colony. The 600 strong community includes lots of puppies that love to play! From June through to August, we respect the sea lions´ mating season and observe the marine mammals from onboard our boats to keep both animals and humans happy and safe.
