Dia de los Muertos in Mexico

Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is an often misunderstood holiday celebrated in Mexico. It originated from a centuries-old Aztec festival in honor of Mictecacihuatl, a goddess known as the Lady of the Dead. Since it follows Halloween, some people might conclude that it is the same holiday or an evil holiday praising death, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. November 1st is traditionally referred to as Dia de los Angelitos (Day of the Little Angels) in Mexico and is the day to honor infants and children who have died; followed by November 2nd, the actual Dia de los Muertos, when families tribute adults whom they have lost. It is believed that on these days, the souls of the deceased return to earth to be with their families and loved ones.

The mood of these holidays will vary from grievance to humorous as relatives reminisce about funny events and anecdotes of their loved ones. One of Mexico’s most prominent symbols of Dia de los Muertos are the Catrina figures (little statues of skeletons dressed in formal clothing) which originated as a parody poking fun at upper class Mexican females. Another tradition involves reciting short poems called calaveritas (little skulls), which are mockingly funny verses poking at the quirky habits or comical events of the deceased and their past.

It is important to note that the celebrations for these holidays vary widely throughout the different regions of Mexico. In some areas, the cemetery plays a larger role in celebrations than in others where the home is the center of celebrations where altars and ofrendas are built. The favorite food and beverage of the deceased are often taken to graves and alters to honor the dead and in some regions, people celebrate the loss of children by hosting dinners consisting of specific foods and sweets. Costumes, body paint, and imagery of skulls and bones are often important in many areas of Mexico when celebrating these holidays as well.

Day of the Dead in San Miguel de Allende

As November approaches, families stream in and out of local cemeteries to scrub tombstones, clear away weeds and lay out flowers and candles. In the weeks before the celebration, a special market is set up near the Plaza Civica where everyone shops for decorations among stalls of sugar skulls, miniature coffins, skeleton puppets and the familiar skeleton masks and figures, known as calacas. The city annually celebrates  The Calaca Festival hosting various artistic and cultural  events for children and adults. While Mexico City holds several events to commemorate the traditions and icons of Dia de los Muertos, the greatest immersion can be found in Mixquic. In the center of this neighborhood is one of Mexico City’s oldest cathedrals and surrounding it is it’s cemetery. Candlelight processions and mourning families join in the graveyard at their loved ones tombstone throughout the night. Outside the gate is a complete change of scenery; the neighborhood is a full fair with rides, carnival games, face painting, and entertainment including artistic performances and interpretations of the holiday. Most interestingly, there is a museum that shows a documentary of Dia de los Muertos in Mixquic and  how traditions are being influenced by Halloween.

Day of the Dead in Yucatan Peninsula

In the Yucatán Day of the Dead is known as ´Hanal Pixan´, meaning ´Food for the Souls´ in Mayan. In celebration of these special dates, families prepare the traditional dish ´Mucbipollo´. This large tamale-esque specialty is made with corn dough and stuffed with fresh vegetables, herbs, and meat or poultry. Once wrapped in banana leaves, the mucbipollo is cooked in a pre-Hispanic pit oven in the ground called a ´pib´. To celebrate the lives of their beloved souls, communities create beautiful altars in their homes that are thoughtfully decorated with photos, flowers, candles, and food. This altar ritual is a meaningful way to remember the deceased during Hanal Pixan.

Day of the Dead in Chiapas – Altars & Graveyards

Sugar skulls, yellow marigolds, and ´Catrina´ skeletons are emblematic of Mexico´s Day of the Dead festivities. This annual celebration inspires us to enjoy life, honor the deceased, and take a different view of mortality.

Day of the Dead originated thousands of years ago in pre-Hispanic Mexico and has since been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Aztec and Toltec people accepted death as a natural part of the circle of life, and instead of mourning the departed, kept their spirits alive through remembrance. While this constructive attitude towards death has indigenous roots, the observance days were aligned to the Catholic calendar on November 1st (All Saints´ Day) and 2nd (All Souls´ Day).

Come and experience authentic Day of the Dead customs with Journey Mexico in the southern state of Chiapas, where a strong indigenous identity and traditions are preserved. In the heart of the state, you´ll find San Cristóbal, a pretty highland pueblo with mixed cultural influences, past and present. Colonial-era architecture and churches meet the colorful textiles and Mayan language of the Tzotzil people, while a growing international crowd visits to soak up this unique Pueblo Mágico.

Prepared on the run-up to Dia de los Muertos, colorful altars are a way for families to commemorate and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Traditionally, altars are used to guide the dead back to the realm of the living for one day, grabbing the souls´ attention with sensorial displays of bright colors, music, and scents like copal incense, believed to remove negative energy. To welcome the souls after their long journey, the deceased´s favorite food and drinks are offered and you´ll often see treasured objects which belonged to them on the altars. Sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), candles and marigolds are ubiquitous with Day of the Dead and can be seen across Mexico.

On your DOTD experience with Journey Mexico in Chiapas, you´ll get to create your own altar in San Cristóbal, participating in the town´s public display. For a personal touch, bring along photographs and belongings of your departed loved ones to decorate your altar. We´ll take you to pick up all the other effects you´ll need from a local market to make your tribute part of the local tradition. Part of the fun is wandering around town to admire the meaningful altars created for these special dates whilst soaking up the atmosphere of celebration in San Cristóbal where music, exhibits, and performances are put on especially.

As part of the Day of the Dead commemorations in Mexico, cemeteries come alive as local people gather to pay homage to their dead. Some festivities are joyful, and others more somber, as is customary to each community.

The sacred burial hill of El Romerillo is lined by tall blue crosses adorned with pine boughs and marigolds. Thousands of Tzotzil Chamula people come together to honor their departed in an uplifting festival with traditional music, food stalls and rides for the children. Families visit the simple graves and lay offerings of flowers, fruit, candles, incense, soft drinks and pox, a locally brewed corn liquor.

While the offerings may be similar, the atmosphere at Amatenango del Valle is much more solemn than that of El Romerillo. The serene burial ground is surrounded by corn and perches on a hill that overlooks the village of Amatenango. Stories are exchanged and musicians play song requests made from the living in remembrance of the dead.

The village of Zinacantán is known for its specialty in backstrap loom weaving and eye-catching floral embroidery, created by the artisan women of the Tzotzil Maya community. The flowers that inspire these designs are a key part of Day of the Dead. At Mukenallakolteclum Cemetery, the Tzotzil Maya hold their main graveyard festivity dressed in colorful flower-embroidered outfits with amazing flower arrangements on display.

The cemeteries of San Juan Chamula and San Sebastián show a contrast between Maya and city burial sites. In the town of San Juan Chamula, the graves of the Tzotzil Maya are marked with wooden crosses in the absence of headstones and covered with soil mounds. San Sebastián´s cemetery is filled with concrete tombs and mausoleums, quite different to the burial sites of the Tzotzil communities.

Mexico´s Day of the Dead traditions have deep roots in the past and huge importance in the present. While the colorful aesthetic and sensorial experience of these celebrations attract visitors from all over the world, the devotion to honoring the lives of passed loved ones and keeping their memory alive is a powerful take-away.

Mexico’s COVID-19 Traffic Light Monitoring System

In an effort to control the spread of COVID-19, the Mexican federal government implemented a four-color “traffic light” monitoring system to alert residents and foreign visitors to the epidemiological risks in each of the country’s 32 states and provide guidance on restrictions on certain activities.

The traffic-light system is based on four colors:

RED Core economic activities are allowed, including strolling in the area surrounding of your home during the day.

ORANGE In addition to core economic activities, non-essential businesses can run with only 30% of their staff. Maximum precautionary measures must be taken, mainly with people that may be at a higher risk of a severe COVID-19 illness. Outdoor activity centers will be open, allowing only a limited capacity (number of people).

YELLOW All working activities are allowed, with care being taken of people that may be at a higher risk of a severe COVID-19 illness. Outdoor activity centers will be open allowing only a limited capacity (number of people). As is true with other traffic-light colors, these activities should be carried out using basic precautionary measures and care being taken of people that may be at a higher risk of a severe COVID-19 illness.

GREEN All activities, including schooling, are allowed.

Mérida´s Hacienda Xcanatun Undergoing Luxury Expansion

The grand Hacienda Xcanatun sits on the outskirts of Mérida in Yúcatan state; a contemporary revival showcasing the region´s rich historical heritage of 18th Century henequin haciendas.

Since 2020, the iconic property has been under the management of the Banyan Tree Group´s upscale sub-brand, Angsana, and is now undergoing enhancements on the western side of the property, including 36 additional suites and impressive resort facilities.

Designed by local architectural firm Ana Juliana, the new suites (several with private plunge pools) engage traditional materials used in the henequin hacienda age; natural wood, leather, limestone, and the bright mosaic of pasta tile floors.

Outside of the guest rooms, a 55 meter, Olympic-size swimming pool is under construction, as well as a handy poolside snack bar. The internationally acclaimed Angsana Spa & Wellness Center is also on the way; amenities that are key to the Banyan Tree brand´s wellness-focused identity.

The enhancement project is on schedule for completion on June 30th 2022, opening the next day to welcome in July with luxury. While the works are underway, the hotel, Casa de Piedra restaurant, the property´s two current pools and spa, all remain open with normal operation. Noise levels are being monitored and guests assigned to existing suites that do not face the fenced-off project area.

The Riviera Maya´s only all-pool villa resort welcomed in 2022 with expansion, presenting the debut of 34 new, beautifully designed beachfront suites and the Wellbeing Sanctuary program.

The suites divide into four luxurious categories ranging from 1,675 to 2,470 sq. ft. in size, all with coffee and tea making facilities, a smart TV and Wi-Fi.

In tune with the deep integration of wellness in the Banyan Tree experience, the Mayakoba´s Wellbeing Sanctuary concept strives to help guests cultivate a personal journey towards a healthier and happier existence. Participants will receive a 64-point wellness assessment and assistance in identifying their individual needs, complemented with access to a plethora of daily wellbeing activities and nutritious menu options, plus a guide to continue personal wellness practices beyond their stay.

Xala: The Conscious Development Moving into Mexico´s Pacific Coast

Xala is making its home on Mexico´s west coast, located around a 1.5-hour drive (105km) south of Puerto Vallarta´s Airport and just 5 minutes from the future Costa Alegre Airport. The huge scale blueprint is moving into the Tomatlán municipality of Jalisco state, with the development adapting its name from the area´s local town of Chalacatepec. This secret stretch of the Costa Alegre is ruggedly beautiful; 3000 acres of Pacific coast with white sand beaches backing onto agricultural hillsides, all pitched between two freshwater estuaries.

It´s over a decade since the seed of an idea was planted, now phasing into bloom under the keen eyes of Ricardo Santa Cruz and the Bremer brothers, developers behind the low-density, nature-mindful, and ultra-luxe Mandarinas O&O in neighboring Nayarit state. While Xala will have all the features of a luxury development, its foundational moral pillars and background work set the project apart as a socially and environmentally conscious development. Observing the often-divisive social effects and environmental harm of traditional resort models, the project´s concept pours through a lens of community and environmental preservation. It wants to get back to the roots of what traveling is all about: cultural immersion, meaningful exchange, and inspiration. Xala aims to bring social integration, environmental conservation, and a luxury lifestyle proposal into harmony.

The voices of the 68 families who already call Chalacatepec home have played a big part in the trajectory of the project´s development. The local community knows what it truly needs, and developers who listen and act on these extend the agency for a local sense of pride. Originally there was a plan to build schools in the area, however passing the microphone to locals revealed that after-school programs would have a more positive impact. As a result, Xala´s extensive vision includes constructing a cultural center, soccer field, skate park, and beach club for residents. Such spaces and resources give local children the opportunity to find out what inspires them, whether that be art, dance, music, skateboarding, soccer, learning English, or volunteering at local turtle sanctuaries.

In a bid to restore and protect the natural environment, Xala is reforesting over 600 acres of land, allocating some 1200 acres as a protected area, and will create programs to preserve species in the area such as reptiles, ocelots and turtles. For the past 5 years the project has been working on programs with local farmers and fisherman, to deoxygenate and purify the land in response to erosion and the use of pesticides on crops, as well as estuary restoration. Additionally, the new waterway built for the development will provide year-round drinking water to the families living in the area it will travel through.

Xala will of course offer plenty of luxury with plans for more than 75 new residences, a handful of boutique hotel brands, a hostel, and beach clubs. The idea is that a wider demographic will be able to access and invest in the sliding scale of products, from 6-figure 1-bedroom residences up to the multi-millions. The difference is that unlike other high-end, master-planned communities, the same rights, access (including 5 miles of public beach) and amenities will be available to all. Together with a program of environmental, social, and agricultural community projects for residents and visitors to get involved with, the concept supports diversity and integration.

Xala´s doors will be opened to new homeowners and visitors in early 2023 upon completion of phase one´s initial 125-million-dollar investment. Several community-focused aspects like the cultural center and soccer field are already underway or even completed, as is the case of the skate park constructed with partner Johnny Schillereff, former Element Skateboarding CEO and founder of The Heart Supply. This strategy forges an organic opportunity for the local community to first find itself amongst the new developments before outside interests move in.

Much deeper than simply a high-end destination, Xala strives to be the benchmark for the sustainable, eco-friendly, and conscious travel of the future.

Omicron Covid Update: Travel Safety in Mexico

As the Omicron variant of Covid-19 makes its way into the global consciousness, border and travel rules can be affected, with some countries making adjustments. Here in Mexico, the borders remain open to travelers without any additional restrictions mandated at present.

At Journey Mexico, we know that many people around the world are eager to travel, and we´re here to help those who are ready to do so as safely as possible. Read below for what to expect when arriving to Mexico, and our top tips on Covid security while traveling.

Entry to Mexico

Before arriving to Mexico, all travelers must complete a ´Declaration of Health´ form which poses questions about general health and any potential recent exposures to Covid-19. A negative Covid test and proof of vaccination are not required, however, you may be subject to a health screening upon arrival. In the case of presenting Covid symptoms you will be tested and, depending on the outcome, could be subject to a mandatory quarantine.

Safety Measures in Mexico

The Mexican government´s ´traffic light´ system continues to provide guidance on any Covid restrictions per Mexico´s 32 states, in accordance with the epidemiological risks. You can check an up-to-date traffic light map of the country, as well as a state-by-state breakdown of positive Covid cases on our blog here.

While borders have remained open, health and safety protocols have been adopted across Mexico´s main destinations and companies, as suggested by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

Tips for Safer Travel

  • Take private transportation to help minimize the risk of catching an illness in a crowded transportation hub, such as an airport. Journey Mexico can help to organize privately chartered planes and helicopters throughout Mexico.
  • If you’re worried about transmission in hotels or resorts, private villas are an alternative. Many of the luxury villas in our elite portfolio offer resort-style amenities, including staff. Journey Mexico can also help to arrange additional staff if desired.
  • Should you wish to visit major landmarks but without the crowds, Journey Mexico enjoys privileged, off-hours access to some of Mexico’s most beloved landmarks. This includes trips to Chichen Itza, the National Anthropology Museum, and Tulum’s archeological ruins.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after having been in a public space, coughing, or sneezing. If this is not possible, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Where possible, distance yourself from anyone presenting cold or flu-like symptoms, fever, or a cough.

Discover the Mayan World with an Immersive Dining Experience at Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Visiting Mayan archaeological sites is awe-inspiring. Millions of travelers go to these fascinating and mysterious destinations every year. In the company of the right guide, every stone and engraving speaks to you of a distant, fascinating world with a unique understanding of itself and its surroundings. But that world is not as distant as you may think. Mayan culture and traditions are very much alive in the Yucatan peninsula; you just need to know where to look.

After a day of exploring archaeological sites in the Riviera Maya with Journey Mexico, HAAB at Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a sensuous, immersive way to deepen your knowledge of the Maya civilization—as well as a way to sate the appetite you worked up swimming in the Caribbean and climbing pyramids.

HAAB is a one-of-a-kind dining experience that celebrates Yucatan’s cuisine and commemorates the way the Maya grew their crops in forest gardens.

Traditional Mayan warriors lead guests to the HAAB garden deep in the jungle. The setting is based on the four classical elements of nature: guests sit close to the earth, surrounded by water features, breathing in the air from the Caribbean Sea while their food is prepared over an open fire pit. There, you will first witness a sundown ritual that marks the passage of day into night, with Mayan concepts of time and space taking center stage for the evening.

The menu highlights authentic Mayan food, with local, fresh ingredients. As such, the menu adapts to what is in offer throughout the year. During your HAAB experience you will enjoy delectable dishes like Yucatan’s iconic cochinita pibil (spiced suckling pig), fresh fish wrapped in banana leaves, lime soup, chaya empanadas, and traditional sopes—every dish a way to discover and relish centuries-old flavors. Fresh waters made with local ingredients like lime, orange, hibiscus flower, and lemongrass accompany your dinner, or you can try signature drinks prepared with Mayan liqueurs.

As your body takes in the sights, sounds, smells, and flavors, your mind is introduced to the wonders of the Mayan civilization. Storytelling is an essential part of the dining experience. Seated around a wooden table under the stars, you will learn about the Mayan calendar, tales, legendary characters, customs, crafts, and astronomy.

HAAB is aptly named after the Mayan solar calendar, which consisted in 18 months of 20 days each, plus five remaining days that were considered especially unlucky.

Explore the Riviera Maya and join in the HAAB experience during your stay at a lavish Beachfront Villa with Banyan Tree Mayakoba and Villas by Journey Mexico. With various types of accommodation on offer, each villa is designed to give way to the surrounding beauty of freshwaters lagoons and the Caribbean Sea, creating your own sanctuary for the senses.
