Rejuvenate at Andaz Mayakoba

Andaz resort is one of four award-winning hotels located in the gated Mayakoba complex, set on the Riviera Maya’s stunning coastline, just north of Playa del Carmen. The luxury property takes inspiration from its cultural and natural surroundings, presenting a fresh and meaningful expression of what a Mexico resort stay can be.

To set the tone for a special stay, guests are welcomed to the ‘Sanctuary’ reception area with a refreshing cocktail. An invitation to make a wish and throw a stone into a cenote-esque pool nods to the original Mayan ritual, performed to be looked upon favorably by the Gods.

Resort Blueprint

Andaz Mayakoba puts it’s own spin on youthful design; think sleek white buildings, punctuated by huge colorful murals of local wildlife. The bright birds, jaguars, and even an octopus, are painted by local street artist Senkoe, who’s clever eye for design finds the balance between bold and elegant.

The large grounds of the resort are split into two sections, beach and lagoon, which can be accessed by golf carts, or the fantastic complimentary bicycles that are dotted throughout. In the evenings, paths are lit up for a balmy after-dinner ride, passing through mangroves that are characteristic of the area.

Man-made lagoons and canals have become home to a whole host of wildlife, including many bird species, iguanas and turtles. Blend into the natural world as you step onto the wonderful Eco Cruise, a boat ride that’s included for guests and winds through mangrove-laden canals, passing the local flora, fauna, and wildlife on its way.

Each of the resort’s two sections has a generous outdoor swimming pool, with the lagoon area’s pool adjacent to Cocina Milagro restaurant and the beach area’s looking onto the Caribbean Sea. The private stretch of beach is another beautiful opportunity to soak up the sun and relax. Unwind, surrounded by soft white sand, studded with just enough palms, and take a dip in the crystal turquoise waters.

The 214, open-plan rooms feel fresh, with a light color palette and Mayan-themed decorative details. The accommodations are split across the resort’s two main areas, offering a choice of views from lagoons and mangroves, to the ocean and even Mayakoba’s El Cameleon golfing greens, the first PGA course in Latin America. As a family-friendly hotel, connecting rooms are available to provide privacy and proximity.

Adventures

Andaz offers opportunities for exploration from an array of angles, depending on your vacation style. Whether that’s through action or relaxation, engaging or disconnecting, for families, friends or couples, the resort’s facilities, activities and location offer rejuvenating experiences for all.

Cuisine

Uncover new culinary delights through a brilliant curation of dining experiences, located at both ends of the resort. On the beachside, try Tinta de Pulpo’s poolside offerings like tasty tacos and ceviches. Healthy, plant-based fare shares a spot at the pool with the bright and cheerful Vegan Bar.  Sotavento presents front row seats to the Caribbean Sea, serving up an extensive seafood selection and grill specialties like lobster tail, right on the beach.

Over by the lagoon, Cocina Milagro’s breakfast buffet is a delicious way to start the day, complete with fresh, outdoor tamale and quesadilla stations, and a fabulous selection of Mexican salsas. Dinner reservations feel special at the gorgeous Casa Amate, designed to resemble a residency with a range of intimate dining rooms, serving Latin American cuisine alongside an expansive wine list.

Wellness

Take a journey of self-discovery at Naum Wellness & Spa, named after the Mayan God of consciousness and mind. Customized Naum rituals are designed to help guests find their inner harmony, clarity and balance, using various Mayan-inspired spa treatments. Find stillness in six treatment rooms that overlook peaceful mangroves, and a hydrotherapy area with a sauna, jacuzzi and steam room.

For those that find balance through a different kind of energy, the state-of-the-art fitness centre is well equipped, and embraces guided yoga and meditation sessions as part of the program. Guests can also head down to the beach to connect with the elements as they float in the blue Caribbean waters, or take part in a range of water activities, such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Families

Andaz is well set up for a brilliant experience as a family, with the KIMBO Kid’s Club providing plenty of adventure for young ones, while adults take some time out for themselves. A full schedule of complementary activities will keep curious minds entertained, with engaging activities for ages 4-12 such as treasure hunts, arts and crafts, movies and beach visits.

Surroundings

For those who like to venture out and get to know the surroundings, Andaz is in a perfect location to experience the cultural and natural wonders of the Riviera Maya.

The fascinating Tulum archaeological site is around an hour to the south, where visitors can learn about the only Mayan city by the sea, and swim in the waters below the iconic ‘Castillo’ structure. A stop off at the tranquil Yal-ku Lagoon is a must for a refreshing dip, and a chance to snorkel amongst an abundance of colorful fish.

For an action-packed adventure, head to Río Secreto where you can bike through the jungle and go caving in a huge, semi-submerged cenote system that was hidden for hundreds of years.

The Takeaway

Andaz Mayakoba presents a unique resort environment in the Riviera Maya, where families, couples and friends alike can find a refreshing vacation experience waiting for them.

From the uplifting décor, nature-immersed setting and high-end amenities, to fresh dining options and engaging cultural surroundings, a sense of rejuvenation, and class, runs through the concept. After a stay at Andaz Mayakoba, guests can’t help but carry a piece of this sensation home.

Mexico: Latest Travel Update

Dear friends and fellow travelers,

Balance: With each passing day it seems the world is reactivating. More openings instead of closings; more plans instead of cancelations, and life is getting busy. We’ve all been waiting for this moment, but let’s not forget what we’ve learned! Family, friends, nature, and health, it’s what has gotten us through this turbulent time and will keep us grounded as we look to the future too. While we can’t wait to get back out there, to travel and explore, or just to the office perhaps, let’s stay grounded and prioritize the balance that we have learned through the Pandemic.

Elections: Speaking of balance, Mexico has just held mid-term elections that were watched closely around the world. I’m glad to report that beyond any party in particular, the Mexican Electoral System won. There was worldwide praise for the integrity of the process and strength of Mexican institutions that in the end allowed the voice of the people to be heard – and that voice voted for more balance, fortifying the system of checks and balances that undergirds Mexico’s democracy.

COVID: As most of you are aware, in Mexico we never closed our borders to international visitors and have ranked as one of the top five most visited countries in the world, according to the World Tourism Organization over the last 15 months. While Mexico has suffered the pandemic like many other countries around the world, Mexicans, especially those working in the hospitality sector have been exemplary in their adoption of COVID protocols. This, along with the increasingly warm weather and slow, but steady vaccine rollout has Mexico’s COVID outlook improving. Last week, there were some updates to the “traffic light” system that the Mexican government has been utilizing to communicate the current health situation in the country, which is encouraging; we’re confident and hopeful for a full recovery of our beloved travel industry here in Mexico and worldwide.

Other updates on Mexico Travel:

  • The normal questions about Sargassum have returned along with the unwelcome seaweed along limited areas of Mexico’s Caribbean Coast.
  • We’ve also been flooded with panicked clients requesting help to renew their (unbeknownst to them) expired passports. Please make sure your passports are renewed to avoid any surprises when you’re ready to travel!

Gracias: Thanks as always for reading our newsletter, we hope it has been informative, timely, and relevant for all things Journey Mexico! And of course, let us know how we can assist you with anything at all.

Warm regards,

Zachary Rabinor

Chablé Resorts: Journey to Relaxation

Chablé Yucatán and Chablé Maroma are masters in the union of wellness, nature and luxury. These exceptional resorts capture the essence of peace and tranquillity, inspired by the natural and historical landscapes which surround them. While each stunning property shines its own quintessence, from the jungle to the coast, they both collectively invite guests into a story of stillness, reconnection and the art of relaxation.

Peeping out from lush jungle green, Chablé Yucatán is a beautiful sanctuary that’s located just 25 minutes to the south of Mérida. Within the 740-acre grounds stand a diligently restored, 19th Century Hacienda and 40 serene, stand-alone villas with private pools.  The use of natural materials like stone, wood and glass work in harmony with structural design, to create a sense of awareness and connection with the remarkable surroundings.

The heart of Chablé Yucatán has to be its mesmerising, private cenote. These natural, freshwater sinkholes are characteristic of the Yucatán and were considered sacred to the Mayans. Chablé pays homage to the mysticism of the site, choosing it as the perfect spot for the Spa’s ancient Mayan healing techniques, and mindful yoga practices.

At Chablé, a good meal is rooted deep into the soil where ingredients are planted and harvested, it’s seasoned by the passion of the chef, and a celebration of its heritage. The sophisticated and innovative culinary experiences at Chablé use fresh produce from the hotels own traditional Mayan gardens, Ka’anches. Menus come from the vision of acclaimed chef Jorge Vallejo, and the hands of executive chef Luis Ronzón. To loosen up, the world’s largest private tequila collection is on hand.

The offerings and atmosphere at Chablé Yucatán take guests on a luxurious journey to tap into luxury, relaxation, and ultimately themselves. The surrounding area extends an invitation to connect with Mexican history, and extraordinary nature. Visit the archaeological sites of ancient Mayan cities, Uxmal and Kabah, swim in cenotes, observe pink flamingos in the Celestún Biosphere, and stroll down the Paseo de Montejo in Mérida city.

The route to reach the next relaxation hub, Chablé Maroma, is a trip through more history. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World is on the same path, the 75-feet tall Temple of Kukulkan, or El Castillo, at Chichen Itza. The surrounding cenotes are perfectly placed for a refreshing dip after such an impressive sight. Continuing east from the archaeological site, you’ll cross from Yucatán state into Quintana Roo, the home of Chablé Maroma.

Chablé’s coastal wellness resort is set on Punta Maroma, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mexican Caribbean thanks to its sparkling, turquoise waters and calming atmosphere. Time seems to flow at a different rate when you’re on a private, 650-foot, palm-studded beach. Reaching an affinity with the elements of this paradise is easy as you soak up the sun’s rays, snorkel with colorful fish and kayak through clear waters. The open walls and private pools of the contemporary accommodations, designed to connect with nature, also help.

In tune with its Yucatán sister, Chablé Maroma believes in living in harmony with nature and honoring cultural tradition. The Spa experience is based on three expressions of movement in the natural world; by water, the trees, and air. Rituals, therapies and treatments take inspiration from these to help guests to relax, restore and transform. Mayan cleansing rituals like the Temazcal, and guided meditations go beyond skin-deep.

A graceful pool sits parallel to the beach, with dining alongside by Kaban restaurant that reflects the colors, textures, and flavors of the sea. Bu’ul presents more wonderful culinary experiences by Jorge Vallejo, serving up contemporary cuisine from central and southern Mexico. The terrace bar, Raw, fuses mixology and fresh seafood dishes, with sparkling sea views.

To the south of Punta Maroma, there are cultural coastal gems to be experienced. Explore the Tulum archaeological site, the only Mayan city by the sea, or cruise the calm waters of Cozumel Island on a luxury catamaran. Adventure into the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, one of Mexico’s most important natural habitats that’s made up of an extensive water system, marshes, mangroves, and virgin tropical forest.

A blended stay from the jungle of Chablé Yucatán to the shores of Chablé Maroma is more than just a visit; it’s an experience of immersion in nature and privacy, of connection to wise tradition and to the self, a journey into luxury and relaxation.

We Can’t Wait to See You Again

Dear faithful Journey Mexico team, friends, family, and community,

It is hard to believe it has been more than a year since the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the most important and impactful global crisis most of us have ever experienced. The Pandemic has accelerated and amplified the true essence of each and every one of us at a personal, familial, and professional level. It’s also laid bare our values. I’m humbled and honored to see the true colors of our team, partners, guests, and clients in the face of such difficult times – what an amazing community we’ve built through good times and now crisis. We’re already seeing the first waves of recovery, which will surely spread throughout the world – the light at the end of the tunnel is clear and although we are not there yet, I’m hopeful and confident that it grows brighter every day.

I wanted to take an important pause before the long awaited and direly needed recovery and the breakneck pace that will surely ensue to THANK YOU. Gracias for your patience as we struggle to emerge from the wreckage of the pandemic; gracias for your understanding of just how catastrophic the complete collapse of demand has been to our businesses and life’s work; Gracias for your support and kind words of encouragement in the darkest of times; and gracias your trust in us throughout and as we slog through the choppy and challenging recovery. And of course MIL GRACIAS for your business, which has meant so much more than the desperately needed dollars and cents it brought: your trust, positivity, and faith in us has kept us going!

It’s hard to express the excitement I feel about the future of our lives, families,  companies, and industry; I’m already seeing how much stronger, more resilient, creative, and thoughtful we’ve become. I can’t wait to reunite with old friends and new; to extend a friendly handshake and a warm hug to so many that I’ve missed so much; to travel near and far, narrow and wide, to my familiar favorite places and the far ends of the earth; and restoke my wander lust for all that is new and intriguing as well as reconnect with the world, my friends, and my community.  We’ve navigated a unique moment in time together; we’ll remember each other not because we got to the other side, but for HOW we supported each other, the JOURNEY that we undertook together. Rest assured we’re committed to the future with the same resilience, strength, teamwork, and commitment to share safe, transformative, and seamless travel experiences when you are ready.

What You Need to Know: New Covid-19 Testing Rules for Travelers Flying to the United States

On January 21, U.S. President Biden signed an executive order to affirm new COVID-19 testing requirements and direct agencies to consider additional travel-safety measures. Now travelers flying to the United States from any country, including Mexico, need to show a recent negative COVID-19 test and comply with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention guidelines concerning international travel.

The new rules took effect last January 26, 2021. Here are the CDC’s guidelines for international travel:

  • Get tested 1–3 days before your flight—make sure to have actual results (not pending results) before traveling.
  • If you have a positive result, do not travel.
  • Get tested 3–5 days after your flight.
  • Stay home for seven days after traveling, even if you test negative.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 after you travel, isolate yourself and follow public health recommendations. Do not travel until you are no longer considered a transmission risk—this includes your return trip home.
  • If you do not get tested, it is safest to stay home for 14 days (about 2 weeks) after travel.
  • Avoid those who are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 for 14 days (about 2 weeks), whether you get tested or not.

Valuable information about these new regulations:

Do the U.S Citizens need to get tested?

Yes. The order applies to everyone traveling to the U.S. on international flights, including U.S. citizens. There are exceptions for children under the age of two.

Do I need to get a test to travel to Mexico?

No. Mexico does not have any travel restrictions on U.S. and Canadian citizens. That means you do not need to get a test before your flight to Mexico. It is important to know that all international travelers need to complete a Questionnaire of Identification of Risk Factors in Travelers (Cuestionario de Identificación de Factores de Riesgo en Viajeros) upon arrival in Mexico and your temperature may be taken.

The form can be complete here: https://afac.hostingerapp.com/

Will the Airlines provide the Covid-19 Test?

No. Airlines will not be testing you when you arrive at the airport for an international flight to the U.S. Travelers are required to obtain a test. The test must be taken no more than three days before your departure date.

Who is checking test results at the airport?

According to the CDC, airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers before boarding and deny boarding to anyone who does not provide documentation of a negative test or documentation of having recovered from Covid-19.

I am flying to the U.S. by private plane. Does this new requirement apply to me?

Yes, the order applies to commercial and private flights, according to the CDC.

Where can I get tested?

Resorts across Mexico, tourist destinations, clinics, and main airports in Mexico are working to offer testing options. Several hotels in Mexico are offering on-site testing that can be coordinated.

Journey Mexico’s Statement on US Requirements for Covid-19 Tests for All International Travelers

View the list of COVID-19 testing sites in Mexico

What is the difference between the antigen test and PCR test, and which one do I need?

Antigen test: This test detects protein fragments specific to the Coronavirus. It can be done in a clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital. Turnaround time for results is usually very quick and, in some cases, results can be reported within 15 minutes.

PCR test: This test detects RNA (or genetic material) specific to the virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, even those who have no symptoms. The test can be done in a clinic, hospital, or even in your car. Turnaround time is longer, in the 2–3-day range, but results can be obtained in as little as 24 hours. When demand is high, results can take a week or longer.

It is important to note the distinction in what test results the U.S. will accept. The U.S. will accept either the PCR or antigen test results, while Canada accepts negative results from PCR tests only.

What kind of documentation do I need to show?

The CDC requires travelers flying to the U.S. to have a paper or electronic copy of their negative test results before boarding their flight.

What if my test is positive?

If a guest tests positive and is unable to return home, Journey Mexico will work closely with guests, travel advisors, suppliers, and health facilities to organize the best possible care and services on a case-by-case basis. If you choose not to travel with Journey Mexico, travelers should contact their travel representative or hotel for information.

I already had Covid-19. What kind of documentation do I need?

If you have recovered from Covid-19 within the past three months, you will need proof that you tested positive in the past three months before your flight, as well as a letter from your doctor stating that you are cleared for travel.

I have received the Covid-19 vaccine. Do I still need to test?

Yes, the same requirements apply.

Do I need to quarantine when I go back home?

There is currently no mandatory quarantine when you return to or arrive in the United States. It is recommended by the CDC and President Joe Biden, however. The CDC recommends that travelers get tested three to five days after travel and stay home or in a hotel to self-quarantine for seven days post-travel regardless of the test results.

The CDC recommends that international travelers get tested again 3 to 5 days after arrival from abroad and stay home for seven days after travel, pending a negative test result, or self-quarantine for 14 days (about 2 weeks) with no postflight test.

Is It Safe to Fly on a Plane During COVID-19?

This is a question many people are asking recently.  According to Airbus, The Boeing Company & Embraer research, the risk of inflight COVID-19 transmission appears to be low if passengers are following recommended safety measures.

Source: The International Air Transport Association (IATA)

“The risk of a passenger contracting COVID-19 while onboard appears very low. With only 44 identified potential cases of flight-related transmission among 1.2 billion travelers, that’s one case for every 27 million travelers. We recognize that this may be an underestimate but even if 90% of the cases were unreported, it would be one case for every 2.7 million travelers. We think these figures are extremely reassuring.  Furthermore, the vast majority of published cases occurred before the wearing of face coverings inflight became widespread,” said Dr. David Powell, IATA’s Medical Advisor.

According to the IATA and Aircraft companies, the new protocols implanted on airports and aircraft design characteristics add a further protection layer, contributing to the low incidence of inflight transmission. These include:

  • Limited face-to-face interactions as passengers face forward and move about very little
  • The effect of the seat-back acting as a physical barrier to air movement from one row to another
  • The minimization of forward-aft flow of air, with a segmented flow design which is directed generally downward from ceiling to floor
  • The high rate of fresh air coming into the cabin. Air is exchanged 20-30 times per hour onboard most aircraft, which compares very favorably with the average office space (average 2-3 times per hour) or schools (average 10-15 times per hour).
  • The use of HEPA filters which have more than 99.9% bacteria/virus removal efficiency rate ensuring that the air supply entering the cabin is not a pathway for introducing microbes.
