Coffee country surrounds Coatepec, while colorful Tlacotalpan sits beside the river. In the highlands, Orizaba sits beneath Mexico’s highest peak, and nearby Córdoba is where the treaties ending Spanish rule were signed in 1821.
Veracruz’s African heritage remains especially visible. Gaspar Yanga’s rebellion led to the first free Black settlement in the Americas, while Son Jarocho carries that history through music and dance. Ingredients brought by enslaved Africans, including taro, sweet potato and cassava, still shape the region’s cuisine.
